Best Places to Visit in Donegal

Your Wild Atlantic Way adventure awaits when you plan a stay at Donegal Boardwalk Resort. The resort offers the unique opportunity to explore Donegal and breathe in the sea air along the Wild Atlantic Way, where there is an extensive range of places to visit, particularly in Donegal.

There is no better feeling than the anticipation of a coastal break to recharge your batteries. We are fortunate here in Carrigart, Donegal to have an abundance of visitor attractions and places of interest to visit on our doorstep.

Your host, George and his team have a wealth of knowledge on the very best things to do and places to visit in Donegal. They are delighted to share these recommendations with you.

Here are just some of their recommendations to explore Donegal and enjoy a truly local experience. Some of the best places to visit local to Donegal Boardwalk Resort are conveniently located. This is because they are a short driving distance from the resort.

Visit Doe Castle in Donegal

A 6-minute drive from the resort, you will find Doe Castle. This is the ancient seat of the Mac Sweeney Chiefs of Doe, situated on Sheephaven Bay in northwest Donegal.

The castle stands on a small peninsula called Cannon Point. It is protected on three sides by the sea and a trench hewn from solid rock on the fourth side.

Take a trip and visit Ards Friary, Donegal

The church and friary were built in 1966 on the site of the old Ards House. This very peaceful place is located 12.5 KM from the resort.

Ards Friary is set in mature woodland near the northeastern tip of the Ards peninsula. It also has a selection of exotic trees.

To the small pier south of the friary, coal and other goods were delivered. Silica sand was also exported, which was mined on Muckish Mountain.

Enjoy the Atlantic Drive in Donegal

The Atlantic Drive is a short but very spectacular road around the Rosguill Peninsula. It encapsulates the dramatic marriage of two natural elements – the ageless land of Donegal and the timeless courtship of the Atlantic.

The Atlantic Drive has forged a glorious alliance of great beauty. As it is only about 12km around, the Atlantic Drive is also perfect for a walk or cycle. This is the best way to appreciate the gorgeous views.
