Must-visit destinations when staying at Donegal Boardwalk Resort

Your Wild Atlantic Way adventure awaits. A stay at Donegal Boardwalk Resort is a unique opportunity to explore Donegal and breathe in the sea air along the Donegal coast. We are fortunate here in Carrigart. There is an abundance of stunning places of natural beauty to visit on our doorsteps. We have compiled our must-visit destinations for your stay with us.

Each of our stunning day trip suggestions is within a 30-minute drive from the resort. Adventures and new experiences are also a convenient distance away!

Doe Castle

6-minute drive

Firstly, Doe Castle, ancient seat of the Mac Sweeney Chiefs of Doe, is beautifully situated on an inlet of Sheephaven Bay in north-west Donegal. The castle stands on a small peninsula called Cannon Point. It is protected on three sides by the sea. On the fourth side lies a trench hewn from solid rock.

Located 5.4km from Donegal Boardwalk Resort, Doe Castle is a must-visit destination and the perfect Instagram photo opportunity!

Ards Friary

12-minute drive

Alternatively, visit Ards Friary when you visit our resort. The church and friary at Ards were built in 1966 on the site of the old Ards House. Additionally this, very peaceful destination in Donegal is set in mature woodland near the north-eastern tip of Ards Peninsula. It has an interesting selection of exotic trees. It was to the small pier south of the friary that coal and other goods used to be delivered. In addition, this is where silica sand exported, which was mined on nearby Muckish Mountain.

If you choose to dine at Hooked Restaurant when you stay with us, you will enjoy views of Ards Friary across the bay.

Atlantic Drive

20-minute drive

Another of our must-visit destinations in Donegal, the Atlantic Drive is a short but very spectacular road around the Rosguill Peninsula. It encapsulates the dramatic marriage of two natural elements. These are the ageless land of Donegal and the timeless courtship of the Atlantic, has a glorious alliance of great beauty.

As it is only around 12km, the Atlantic Drive is a perfect hiking or cycling route. The best way to take in the trail’s natural beauty.

The Great Pollet Arch

30-minute drive

Finally, visit the Great Pollet Arch on the eastern shores of Fanad Peninsula. It is another fine example of a Donegal sea arch. It also stands as testimony to the sheer power of the Atlantic Ocean as it carves its way through solid rock.

The arch is a well-known photo opportunity along the Donegal coastline. As a result, you can get the perfect Instagram shot!

We hope that you get to enjoy a visit to some of these beautiful places during your stay at the resort. Your host, George and his team have a wealth of knowledge on the very best things to do in the area. They are delighted to share these with you to make the best of your visit.
