We now find ourselves in July and the midst of the school holidays. As a result, we thought it might be a nice idea to share some ideas for a great family trip to Donegal. When holidaying at Donegal Boardwalk Resort, there is a multitude of activities for families to choose from in the local area. The majority of these are a convenient drive away.
To help you make the most of your family trip to Donegal this Summer, we thought we would share some of our own favourite places and recommendations for a great day out along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Gainne Mor Alpacas
Gainne Mor Alpacas is situated in the beautiful area of Sheephaven Bay, Downings, Co. Donegal. They specialise in alpaca walks and farm visits by appointment. You can take one of their gorgeous boys for a walk lasting approximately 60 minutes on the farmland.
The nature of the alpaca is gentle and curious, making walking with alpacas enjoyable and entertaining with their quirky individual characters. The walking route takes in the stunning views of the local area of Sheephaven Bay, Melmore, Horn Head and Muckish Mountain.
Wild Ireland in Donegal
Wild Ireland is a unique wild animal sanctuary on the Inishowen Peninsula. Located in an ancient Celtic rainforest, Wild Ireland offers sanctuary to many animals which have been rescued, such as brown bears, wolves, lynx and wild boar.
Step back in time to an ancient woodland, inhabited by these extinct creatures that have returned to their ancestral home. Lots of wild birds call Wild Ireland home and their beautiful lake is home to swans, ducks and event otters.
Families love to listen to tales of ancient folklore, play in the play park and finish off with some tasty treats and gifts from the Wild Ireland Shop.
A Family Trip to Tropical World in Donegal
Tropical World at Alcorn’s opened its doors to the public in April 2011. This fascinating destination boasts an amazing array of exotic plants, animals and tropical butterflies in the heart of Donegal.
Also home to a mini zoo with many species of birds and mammals, Tropical World provides a picnic area. Along with this, they have an indoor covered play park, birthday party cabin, souvenir shop, toilet and baby changing facilities. It is also fully-accessible for wheelchair users – the perfect location for a family day out.
Lurgybrack Open Farm
Lurgybrack Open Farm is a special place where your family can spend the day together visiting the animals and having fun. The centuries old farm building is home to a range of friendly farm animals that you can come face-to-face with. There is ample space to play safely, wander by the riverside, walk or just sit back and unwind with a tasty snack. You can also have your own family picnic if the weather allows!
Now all you need is to pack the picnic lunch and enjoy.
